Back in Switzerland

August 8, 2007

Dear readers, with a slight delay of 30′ I landet in Basle the day before yesterday.

Saturday night I went with Cora, Vicki, Abraham, Chris, Claudia and Nana to a new nightclub in London. The creative name 24 comes from their address – the club is located near the Regents Street what let me expect that it’s a expensive club… and it is! Therefore I had to pay for a Whisky Cola CHF 23.-. Beside that the club was nice and they played good house music. The club closed at 3 and we decided to go on to East London to check out a after hour club. After having a delicious ciabatta at Chris’ we went to this club. Often the queue in front of the club gives you an idea what crowd can be expected inside the club. So we finally decided not to go ;)

The sun already shone when I was back in my flat. It was about 8 in the morning… I couldn’t sleep at all what led me to pack a few things for my journey back home. It was 1pm when I headed off with Klara to Brighton. At the same time it was my first trip outside London. It was beautiful with the georgeous weather, the seabirds and the little alleys. Check out the pictures!

My time in London was great and will never forget it! In both the business and my free time I made the best out of it. I will miss this great city, the MINICK UK team, the nice people I met, the pub culture and the pubs, the size of the city, the anonymity, the parks, the nightlife, the after-work-pints, the markets, the different look of the city every day, the open and friendly londoners, the oyster card, the different cuisines, the oppertunities, shoreditch and a lot more…

New pictures online!

August 4, 2007

Different sources have given me the feeling that it is rumoured that I’ve already left London, but I’m still here! The thing is, that I just had no time to write a new post. There’s been so much going on these days: my beloved girlfriend visted me last weekend, I’ve wanted to meet all the people I got to know in London, we celebrated my last days at MINICK and so on. Since I still have not much time I just uploaded new pictures. I’ll write a final post tomorrow and will arrive in Switzerland on Monday :( cya later!

You know you’ve been in Switzerland too long when…

July 26, 2007

Can you remember, I published a similar list about London. I laugh about the list about Swiss’ idiosychrasis, although it is hard to agree with some points ;)

You know you’ve been in (German speaking) Switzerland too long when:
..you think it’s economically wasteful to have more than one brand of
a product in a store.
..you think sponteniaty is OK, as long as it’s planned.
..you think getting up early is good.
..you get upset in the train when a foreign tourist opens the window
causing a draft to go down your back.
..you actually get interested in the local elections.
..you know the words to the Swiss national anthem.
..you expect the shop clerk to say goodbye after you purchase something.
..you wait for the shop clerk to open the door to let you out of their shop.
..you prefer to buy in small shops even though its more expensive.
..you think joining clubs is an acceptable way of meeting people socially.
..you start studying for a Nachdiplom.
..you get annoyed when the car ahead of you doesn’t turn off it’s motor
at a traffic light.
..you look forward to Wildsaison.
..you’re prepared to pay for a local dentist.
..you’re not upset when a public holiday falls on a Sunday.
..you try to defend cartel based economics to a visitor.
..you think that plaid jackets with flowery ties don’t look that bad.
..you think it’s fair that you can only wash clothes once a month.
..you wonder why anyone would want to shop outside of working hours.
..you buy Siwss.
..you get concerned about all the foreigners moving into the country.
..you approve of school on Saturday mornings.
..you don’t mind spending all day in the restaurant at a ski resort,
and wonder why all the foreigners insist on skiing when the conditions
are less than optimal.
..you know the difference between Cafe Traesh, and Cafe Luetz, and get
upset when others don’t know.
..you become suspicious of people who think independently.
..you decide on a vacation in the US, planning to buy a car and drive around
for six months.
..you can comment on the quality of english schools in southern England
and California.
..you consider taking a vacation to Florida, but then don’t go, because it’s
too dangerous.
..you think it’s OK to drive slow on Sundays.

50 things you never knew about the London Underground

July 18, 2007
  1. There is only one tube station name which does not have any letters of the word “mackerel” in it – St John’s Wood.
  2. There are only two tube stations which have all five vowels in them – Mansion House and South Ealing.
  3. Considering there are 287 tube stations, things 1 and 2 are quite surprising.
  4. Chancery Lane has the shortest escalator on the system – 50 steps.
  5. Travelling on the tube for 40 minutes is the equivalent of smoking two cigarettes – so save yourself a packet, all you smokers and get on the tube more often.
  6. The shortest distance between tube stations is Leicester Square and Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line – 0.16 miles.
  7. The most popular route for tourists is Leicester Square to Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line. It is quicker to walk this distance than travel on the tube.
  8. The only tube station which shares the name of a well known pop group is All Saints (yeah I know it’s on the Docklands Light Railway – but it’s still on the tube map).
  9. The phrase “Mind the Gap” originated on the Northern line.
  10. The Jubilee line was originally going to be called the Fleet line.
  11. Northfields station on the Piccadilly line was the first to use kestrels and hawks to kill pigeons and stop them setting up homes in stations.
  12. The Central line covers the longest route – from West Ruislip to Epping you will travel 34 miles without changing.
  13. The Waterloo and City line covers the shortest route – 2 kilometres, but considering it only covers two stations – Waterloo and Bank, it doesn’t take Stephen Hawkins to work that one out.
  14. The oldest tube line in the world is the Metropolitan line. It opened on the 10th January 1863.

New camera, new guests, new weather

July 17, 2007

Last weekend in a nutshell: Last Friday I had my first day off for theIMG_3986 reason that Lukas visited me. Fully packed with ideas we got up early on Friday and carry out almost the entire north bank ;) from Westminster over to Trafalgar Square over to St. Pauls Cathedral. We finished our Tour de London at the Design Museum close to the Tower Bridge. In the evening we went to the T Bar in Shoreditch where we met Yves, a classmate of Lukas.

On Saturday we went to Camden Town, Portobello Market, Harrods, Hyde Park and to the Tate Modern. Ditch was the club called we went in the evening.

On Sunday we made a relaxed day starting with a breakfast in the Regents Park, followed by a sightseeing in the lordly IMG_4035neighbourhoods of Mayfair and Belgravia and a delicious dinner at Yves’.

I have to admit that I finally have a new camera and the weather in London changed as well! We’ve finally got summer in town! ;)

Summer arrived!

July 10, 2007

Ehmm… no actually. To be more precisely: summer made just a short stopover in London on last Saturday and Sunday. Today London was overcastted again. And yesterday it was even raining…

I know no post about my weekend so far. That has two simple reasons: yesterday I was too tired and on Sunday I had a hangover and felt rubbish. In addition I was chilling in Regents Park.

On Saturday I went to see the famous shopping venue Harrods. 070707_London_Week6_016It’s a impressive building with different architectural styles. In my opinion the food halls are quite nice as well as the antique area. I think it’s a nice playground for wealthy people.

To watch the prologue of the Tour de France I went to a big screen070707_London_Week6_023 in Hyde Park. The atmosphere was phenomenal and I think the coulisse for the prologue couldn’t be better, with all the beautiful sights of London.

Saturday evening I caught up with Abraham and friends; Christina (German architect), her friend Claudia and Klara (Hungarian photography student). First we wanted to go to a Brazilian Party in Notting Hill but it turned out that it was religious Event. Therefore we changed plan and decided to go to a Latin nightclub in Covent Garden. Great venue with good people and atmosphere. Too many Brazilian beers though… ;)

Pictures are online since Sunday.

Creature comforts

July 7, 2007

Back from Tour de France I’ve just found this marvellous movie from Aardman (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run..). Everybody’s a star in this Aardman Animations Oscar-winner in which animals discuss life at the zoo. I pissed myself laughing. Great!
