… since I’m in London. I see THREE suns on my 5-days weather forecast widget! I agree that this year is a little special and the weather in Switzerland is bad as well. (with best regards from the global warming) Although it is something which is really exhausting here in London. If the sun is shining in the morning, don’t expect that the sun will be shining the whole day. Maybe it will rain just two hours after beginning work. That depresses me sometimes…
Therefore the athlets of Le Tour de France will have good weather conditions when the 3.5km long prolouge will take place around Hyde Park and Green Park.
Yesterday I went with Andrea from MINICK and her husband Cornelius to art galleries in East London (near Victoria Park, Zone 2). Due to a derailment that morning, the part from Liverpool street to Leytonstone was suspended and I had to take the bus.
The event is called First Thursdays and take place every first Thursday in the month. Did you expect this? Some of the galleries are in a industry area and at the first sight you don’t expect any galleries there. But it was good although the galleries are very small.. a added some strange pictures of this night. I of course had to take the pictures with my mobile phone for the reason that my digital camera went bang But the new one is on its way and should arrive London next Thursday.
Last WednesdayMarco came to London to visit the music conference London Calling and to spend 4 days in this great city. So we went to a Pub in east London to welcome him. Therefore I went to bed at about 1.30h what I experience the morning after. Unfortunately I had to lead a workshop that morning. But it was very successful…
On Thursday we were invited by Andrea and Cornelius to enjoy an original Mexican dish. I’ve forgotten the name… but it was delicious! The dish was arranged with chicken, salad and a spicy sauce on deep-fried maize. Again I went to bed about 2.30h and the weekend hadn’t even begun.
The listings on Friday night were surprisingly bad. So we decided to check out a new nightclub called Tea Bar. As normal we had to queue to entry, but when we were at the door the bouncer didn’t let us in for the reason that they only accepted people who were on the guest list. Therefore we went to another club called Tabernacle which was an equal alternative.
On Saturday good ol’ friend Christian arrived at 9 at London City. After having lunch/breakfast in a nice place in Camden Town we went to the Camden Market. While having a nice cup of Cappuccino we met David who told us from good places in London, what he thinks of the bombings, the history of London, that he will stop smoking and much more. After staying for an hour we went to the Imperial War Museum in south London. The exhibition about the Falklands War was interesting.
Our friends in tow we went to an original School Disco party as we wanted to show Marco and Christian something typically British. The dress code was school uniform, therefore we had to buy a tie with stripes. Bouncers in London are usually very strict if there is a dress code. This party was amazing! Everyone wore a white shirt, a striped tie and black trousers. And the girls of course wore short skirts a white shirt and long socks.
Unfortunately a girl smashed my digital camera to the ground when Marco was taking a picture. And I don’t think it is worth to repair the camera.
Last Friday I had a meeting with UK’s Managing Director Todd in a nice Italian Restaurant near Bond Street. We talked about my work and enjoyed delicious Italian food.
In the evening I went with Chris to the KOKO Club. This time there were two rock bands playing typical British rock. The whole night was about Brit rock which kind of music I really like.
On Saturday I decided to take my first architecture tour. Therefore I went to the London City Hall which was created by Foster + Partners (Gherkin, British Museum etc.). The shaping and the use of materials are impressive. There are also other interesting buildings like the Norton Rose Building or the Hay’s Galleria. After a short stopover at the Design Museum I went to the Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster. That was really impressive when you stand in front of it and see the filigree façade.
In the evening we were first in a small Jazz club then we went to the Mother 333 – was good but nothing special though.
Sunday was the first day in London I stayed at home the whole day. I worked for school and did also few private tasks I’ve resolved since I’m in London.
This time I don’t have pictures for you guys, I’d like to apologise that I’m not writing more posts. But the thing is that I don’t really have much time to write new posts. There are always so many things to do. Almost every day we go out for a beer.
Yesterday, for example, we went to a lovely Pub in Soho because MINICK’s CTO Mike was in London for two days. In the UK you usually go to a Pub first rather than have dinner. That saves you a lot of money for the reason that you get drunk earlier and apparently don’t have to pay for a dinner. After enjoying about 3 or 4 rounds, we decided to go for food somewhere along the Oxford Street. Finally we found a nice Chinese Restaurant which is near the Tottenham Court Road Station.
I don’t have any plans for the weekend yet but I’m sure I will post some interessting stories for you.
Friday | 10.00pm | Bedroom Bar, East London
Friday was the birthday of Abraham and we decided to check out the Bedroom Bar. The Bedroom is a kind of insider tip since you find almost no information about this location on the net. But this bar rocks! For the reason of the familiar atmosphere, very cool people and good music. Further, we paid no entry what is far from to be naturally in London. After a delicious bagel around the corner, I went home…
Saturday | 05.00pm | Oxford Street / Apple Store, Central London
After sleeping late and having a few slices of toast with salted butter, I went to Oxford Street to have a look at the huge Apple Store. That’s really a great place, from the architecture view of it as well as from the marketing view. A lot of space with a lot of nice glossy gadgets to play with. And when I was ambling through the store I suddenly spotted a windows starting window which I had to take picture of. Having taken this picture an apple guy came hasty with the words “Shit, no not Windows!”
Saturday | 10.00pm | Roger Sanchez Official Album Release, KOKO Club, North London
Saturday evening I went to the KOKO Club which is just a 5 min. walk away from my flat. I have to say that I’ve never seen a beautiful nightclub like KOKO. The club is built like an opera with balconies, galleries and a lot of stucco work. “Following a multi-million pound make-over by its new owners, the legendary Camden Palace has been relaunched as KOKO. It’s now a state-of-the-art venue with a world class sound system and the largest glitter ball in the world to boot!”
I talked with a guy who comes to KOKO since he’s 18. As he said, he stopped to come to the club when he was 27 and got married. And now he’s divorced and he said “I’m back!” That was funny…
When Roger Sanchez started his amazing 5h-set at 12, the crowd flipped out! KOKO was almost sold out I think, which means there were about 1500 party people. That was an amazing night and I highly recommend this location. Btw: Entry was £25 (CHF 62.-) and a beer £4 (CHF 10.-)
Sunday | 04.00pm | Panic Attack! Art in the Punk Years, Barbican Centre, Central London Unfortunately I had to set the alarm for the morning today, because Barbara came for a short visit to get her remaining luggage. At 4 o’clock I went with Chris to the Barbican Centre where an exhibition is shown with art from the punk years from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s in Britain and the United States.
Yes yes I know – call me photo addicted. New photos online!
Yesterday I went with Chris to Waterloo to enjoy the nice evening at the Thames. We found a very cool place with a gorgeous view over the Thames to the Northbank of London. It’s the terrace of the Royal Festival Hall.
I usually go for a beer 2 or 3 times in the week, with colleagues from the office, to enjoy the great city of London. To find out where to go, there is a very useful mash up online which is called Pintsearch.com.
I’ve already worked two weeks at MINICK UK in London. It’s time to tell you more about my job at MINICK.
MINICK has branches in London, Madrid, Hamburg and Zurich where the headquarter is located. About 80 people work in these branches whereof 12 people work in London. MINICK acts in the field of mobile telecommunication and provides services for mobile phones such as mobile marketing, mobile downloads (video, music, ringtones or images), mobile portals (wap portals) and much more. MINICK has famous brands as their clients e.g.: Robbie Williams, Adidas (World Cup Wap Portal), MTV, RTL (Wer wird M.?), Channel 4…
The culture within MINICK UK is very good and I like the team. Every Friday we’re going for a beer in a Pub around the corner what improves the culture within the team additionally My main part at MINICK is to streamline the whole proposal process but also help with adhoc projects like a competitor analysis what I did for a presentation in the first week . In the morning I start at 9h / 9.30h and work until 18h in the evening. Fortunately my flat is very close to the office and therefore I can walk to the office within about 30 min.
